Moxa is a form of heat therapy, typically used in conjunction with acupuncture treatment. The term moxibustion is actually derived from the Japanese “mogusa’ meaning herb, and the Latin “bustion”, meaning burning.
Treatment involves the burning of moxa (dried leaves of the mugwort plant) in cone or stick form. Heat shields are used to protect the skin while the patient benefits from the radiant heat produced. It penetrates the body, easing muscle tension and pain, restoring proper circulation, and reducing inflammation. Additionally, it creates a deep relaxation response.
